If I had to pick one samgak gimbap from a Korean convenience store, Kimchi Fried Rice & Tuna Mayo (김치볶음밥 참치마요) would be very close to the top of my list.
I already like tuna mayo, but what makes this one better for me is the rice. Instead of plain white rice, it uses seasoned kimchi fried rice, giving the whole triangle more flavor before you even reach the tuna in the middle.
The BIG version in my photos cost ₩1,700, or about US$1.13 at an exchange rate of ₩1,500 to US$1. It is cheap, easy to find, and exactly the kind of thing I grab when I suddenly get hungry in Korea.
1. What Is Kimchi Fried Rice Tuna Mayo Samgak Gimbap?
Samgak Gimbap (삼각김밥) is a triangular rice snack commonly sold in Korean convenience stores. It is made with rice and a filling inside, with dried seaweed wrapped around the outside.
The one I tried here is a Kimchi Fried Rice Tuna Mayo BIG Samgak Gimbap. Instead of plain white rice, it uses seasoned kimchi fried rice with tuna mayo in the center.
That already makes it a little different from the more basic versions.
The package also uses the familiar 1-2-3 opening system. The seaweed stays separated from the rice inside the wrapper until you open it, so it does not become too soft before you eat it. You pull the center strip first, then remove each side of the wrapper, and the rice ends up wrapped in the seaweed.
The triangle shape and packaging are closely related to Japanese onigiri, but Korean convenience stores have developed a huge range of their own flavors, including kimchi, tuna mayo, spicy pork, bibimbap-style fillings and many others.
The BIG version in my photos cost ₩1,700, which is about US$1.13 using an exchange rate of ₩1,500 to US$1. For something you can grab almost instantly from a convenience store, it is a pretty easy snack to try.
2. Why Kimchi Fried Rice and Tuna Mayo Works So Well
This is the part that makes this particular samgak gimbap one of my favorites. I already like tuna mayo, but I personally prefer it even more when the rice itself has some flavor.
Instead of plain white rice, this one uses kimchi fried rice. The rice has that slightly seasoned and lightly oily fried-rice texture, with the savory flavor and a little tang from the kimchi already mixed through it.
Then you get the tuna mayo in the middle. The tuna is mild and savory, while the mayonnaise adds a creamy richness that works almost like a cheat code here. Kimchi fried rice already has plenty of flavor on its own, but the softer tuna mayo in the center balances it really well.
Then there is the seaweed around the outside, which adds another savory layer and a little crispness when the package has just been opened. For such a small convenience store food, there is actually a lot going on. You get seasoned rice, kimchi, tuna, mayonnaise and seaweed all in a few bites.
From the outside, it still looks very simple. It is basically just a triangle covered with seaweed. But once you take a bite, you can see why I like this version so much.
Inside, you can clearly see the reddish kimchi fried rice surrounding the tuna filling. Some bites are mostly kimchi fried rice and seaweed. Then you reach the center and get more of that creamy tuna mayo.
That contrast is what makes it good for me. I already like regular tuna gimbap, but this feels a little more intense and satisfying because the rice is doing some of the work too. You do not have to wait until you reach the filling to get flavor.
3. One of My Favorite Korean Convenience Store Snacks
Personally, this is one of my favorite samgak gimbap combinations in Korea. I like kimchi fried rice, I like tuna mayo, and putting the two together just makes sense to me.
The kimchi gives the rice more umami and a little tang, the tuna stays mild and savory, and the mayonnaise adds that creamy richness that pulls everything together.
It is not a complicated food, but that is exactly why I like it.
Samgak gimbap is also perfect for those moments when you suddenly get hungry but do not really want a full meal. Convenience stores are everywhere in Korea, so it is easy to walk in, grab one, and eat it within a few minutes. You do not need to find a restaurant, wait for food, or spend much money.
That is part of why samgak gimbap has become such an everyday convenience store food here.
There are many different flavors, and each convenience store chain has its own variations. Products also change over time, so you will not always find exactly the same version everywhere. But if you see Kimchi Fried Rice Tuna Mayo Samgak Gimbap, this is the combination I would recommend trying.
It is cheap, easy to find, filling enough for a quick snack, and much more flavorful than it looks from the outside. For me, this is easily one of those Korean convenience store foods I can eat again and again.
If you are visiting Korea and checking out the convenience stores, do not only look at ramyeon, drinks and snacks. Take a look at the samgak gimbap section too.
And if you find the kimchi fried rice and tuna mayo combination, that would be my pick.
