During my recent visit to the bustling Futian district, I stopped by a highly-rated, modern casual hot pot franchise that completely redefined this classic street food for me. Located right in the heart of one of the city's premier shopping destinations, FOOOK Malatang (福客优选麻辣烫) offers a seamless, hygienic, and deeply flavorful dining experience.

FOOOK Malatang is strategically situated inside one of Shenzhen's most popular commercial hubs, making it incredibly accessible for both locals and international tourists.

FOOOK Malatang is located in the heart of Futian, one of Shenzhen's busiest commercial districts. Its location inside COCO Park makes it a convenient dining option whether you are shopping, sightseeing, or simply exploring the area.

The brand name combines the Chinese characters "福" (fú), meaning good fortune, and "客" (kè), meaning guest or customer. Together, the name reflects the brand's focus on providing a welcoming dining experience.



2. The Customization & Ordering Process

What sets FOOOK Malatang apart from traditional sit-down hotpot restaurants is its interactive and highly customizable ordering system. Rather than choosing from a fixed menu, customers create their own bowl by selecting ingredients directly from a self-service ingredient bar. 

This allows each person to customize their meal according to their own preferences, whether they prefer a vegetable-heavy bowl, a meat-focused combination, or a mix of everything.

Upon entering the restaurant, the first step is to pick up a container and a pair of tongs before heading to the refrigerated ingredient section. As shown in the ingredient display area, the ingredients are neatly organized and kept behind clear protective covers. 

The layout is straightforward and easy to navigate, making the selection process simple even for first-time visitors.


One of the biggest attractions of FOOOK Malatang is the wide variety of ingredients available. The ingredient bar offers an extensive selection that allows customers to build a bowl that matches both their taste preferences and appetite. 

Fresh vegetables occupy a large portion of the display, including napa cabbage, lettuce, bok choy, spinach, lotus root, sweet potatoes, and other seasonal options. These vegetables add freshness and texture while balancing the richness of the broth.

The protein selection is equally impressive. Customers can choose from thinly sliced meats, various fish cakes, tofu products, and assorted seafood balls. Different types of tofu are available as well, including frozen tofu, fried tofu skin, and yuba, all of which absorb the broth particularly well during cooking. The variety makes it easy to create different combinations depending on personal preference.

For those looking for something more filling, there are several noodle and carbohydrate options available. Popular choices include instant ramen noodles, sweet potato glass noodles, thick udon noodles, and chewy rice cakes. Each option creates a slightly different texture and eating experience, allowing customers to further customize their bowl.


Once all ingredients have been selected, the container is brought to the checkout counter where it is weighed. Pricing is based on the total weight of the ingredients chosen, giving customers complete control over both portion size and cost. During checkout, customers also select their preferred soup base and spice level. 

Depending on individual taste, the heat level can typically be adjusted from non-spicy to extra spicy, making the meal suitable for both those who enjoy bold Sichuan-style flavors and those who prefer something milder.

After payment, the selected ingredients are sent to the kitchen, where they are cooked and prepared according to the customer's chosen broth and spice preferences. A few minutes later, the finished bowl is served fresh and ready to eat. 

The entire process is efficient, easy to understand, and one of the reasons why Malatang remains such a popular dining option throughout China.



3. Personal Review & Dining Insights

When traveling in China, Malatang is one of those foods that I always find myself coming back to. It is affordable, customizable, easy to find, and offers a great introduction to the bold flavors that have become popular across the country. If you are visiting China for the first time, trying Malatang at least once is almost a must.


The reason I visited this FOOOK Malatang branch in Shenzhen was actually because of a previous experience in Zhuhai. During an earlier trip, I happened to eat at a FOOOK Malatang location there, and it left a surprisingly strong impression on me. 

The broth was flavorful, the ingredients were fresh, and the overall quality was much better than I expected from a chain restaurant. Even after returning home, it remained one of the more memorable meals from that trip. So when I found myself in Shenzhen and noticed another FOOOK branch inside COCO Park, I was curious to see whether it would live up to that experience.


While the Zhuhai location still remains my personal favorite, I was happy to find that the Shenzhen branch was also very solid. The quality felt consistent, the ingredients were fresh, and the overall experience was enjoyable from start to finish.



One thing I particularly appreciated was the dining environment. Although Malatang originally developed as a casual street food, some smaller shops can vary considerably when it comes to cleanliness and presentation. 

In contrast, this branch benefits from being located inside COCO Park, one of Shenzhen's major shopping centers. The ingredient displays are refrigerated, the dining area is clean and comfortable, and the entire operation feels well organized. 

For international visitors who may be hesitant about trying street-side Malatang for the first time, a location like this provides a much more approachable introduction.


As someone who generally gravitates toward meat-heavy bowls, I was especially pleased with the variety of protein options available. Beef, lamb, and pork are always reliable choices, but one ingredient I consistently recommend is duck meat. 

It pairs particularly well with spicy broth and adds a richer flavor compared to some of the more common options.



For this visit, my bowl included a combination of sliced meats, mini cocktail sausages, napa cabbage, lettuce, and instant ramen noodles. The vegetables helped balance the richness of the meat, while the noodles absorbed plenty of broth and tied everything together. It was a simple combination, but one that worked extremely well.

When it comes to spice levels, I personally think medium spicy offers the best overall experience. It provides enough heat and numbing flavor to give the broth character without overwhelming the ingredients themselves. 

Choosing a spice level that is too mild can make the broth feel less distinctive, while the highest levels may be too intense for many diners. Medium spicy strikes a comfortable middle ground and is usually my recommendation for first-time visitors.


Overall, FOOOK Malatang at Shenzhen Futian COCO Park delivered exactly what I was hoping for: fresh ingredients, a clean environment, and a satisfying bowl of customizable Malatang. While I still have a soft spot for the Zhuhai branch that introduced me to the brand, this Shenzhen location proved that the experience was not a one-time surprise.

If you are spending time in Shenzhen and want to try Malatang in a clean and comfortable setting, this is a place I would happily recommend. 

It offers an easy way to experience one of China's most popular comfort foods while enjoying the convenience of a modern shopping mall environment.
