Seoul FoodTrip Quest: Best Spicy Dakdoritang at Yurim

Conquer Seoul spicy chicken Dakdoritang challenge at Yurim. Famous for native chicken and fiery sauce, it is a must-try local side quest

1. Defining What is Dakdoritang?

If you are planning a trip to South Korea, you probably have a list of must-eat items.

While fried chicken often tops that list, Dakdoritang is what you eat when you want a meal that feels like a warm hug with a spicy kick.

Dakdoritang is a traditional Korean stew where chicken is braised with large chunks of potatoes, carrots, and onions.

The magic lies in the sauce, a complex blend of Gochugaru (red chili powder), Gochujang (fermented chili paste), soy sauce, and plenty of minced garlic. As it simmers, the sauce reduces into a thick, savory glaze that penetrates deep into the meat.

It is a dish that represents the heart of Korean home cooking, designed to be shared among friends while sweating slightly from the heat. It is factual, fiery, and deeply satisfying.

2. A Seoul Side Quest: Why Yurim is a Legendary Destination

For a truly authentic "local" experience, you need to head to Gangseo-gu to find Yurim (유림). This is not just a restaurant; it is a landmark that has been serving its signature spicy chicken since 1996.

It has been featured on famous TV programs like Huh Young-man’s White Alumni Travel and Omniscient Interfering View, making it a certified pilgrimage site for foodies.

* Key Information for Yurim :

  • Name : Yurim (유림)
  • Address: 5 Gonghang-daero 71-gil, Gangseo-gu, Seoul (243m from Yeomchang Station, Line 9, Exit 1).
  • Price: A whole Tojong-dak (native chicken) Dakdoritang is 53,000 KRW.
  • Hours: Open until 21:00, with the last order also at 21:00.

What sets Yurim apart is the quality of the bird. They use Tojong-dak, which is a native Korean breed. Unlike the soft, mass-produced chickens found in fast food, this chicken is much larger and has a firm, chewy texture that holds up perfectly against the intense boiling process.

The meat is juicy and has a rustic flavor that perfectly complements the restaurant's famous spicy sauce.

According to local reviews, even the ordinary (보통맛) spice level is quite hot for those who aren't used to Korean heat.

However, it is described as a delicious spiciness that wakes up your appetite rather than just being painful. The dish is almost always paired with their refreshing Dongchimi (cold radish water), which helps neutralize the spice.

Yurim offers a taste of Seoul that is bold, traditional, and unforgettable. From the massive portions of native chicken to the fiery red sauce that has been perfected since 1996, it is a meal that defines the local palate.

If you are ready for a spicy adventure, Yeomchang Station is your starting point.

3. The Spicy Challenge: Why I Love Yurim’s Dakdoritang

Visiting Yurim is a rite of passage for anyone who claims to love spicy food. In the world of Seoul dining, this is a top-tier challenge that rewards you with incredible flavor.

It is often cited as one of the three best Dakdoritang spots in the entire city, and for good reason.

The combination of the chewy native chicken and the thick, sugary-spicy sauce is addictive. While many people recommend the fried rice at the end, I have a personal preference that I think makes the meal even better.

I highly suggest eating the stew with a simple bowl of white rice from the start. Taking a large spoonful of that red sauce and mixing it into fresh rice allows you to enjoy the pure, concentrated flavor of the broth.

It is a true stamina food (Boshinsik) that leaves you feeling energized. The heat is intense, but the depth of flavor is what makes it legendary.

If you are looking for an authentic meal that takes you away from the typical tourist paths, Yurim is the ultimate Seoul side quest.

I personally recommend fried rice, too. The fried rice at the back of the chicken stew will entice you with its artistic flavor. All of these foods can be spicy. However, if you like the spicy flavor, it's worth a shot.

And this is the most famous local restaurant for Koreans in Korea.

If you are interested in the taste of Korea, I think it would be good to go there. Do you want to come eat spicy tempting chicken doritang?
