3. Why I Think Supermarkets Are the Best Way to Travel: A Deep Dive into K-Marts

They say that if you want to know a country's past, you should visit its museums. But if you want to know its present—how people actually live, eat, and dream—you must visit its supermarkets.

Whenever I travel, the local "Mart" is my first stop. It’s not just a place to buy milk; it’s a vibrant, colorful map of a nation's soul. Recently, I spent some time exploring a large Korean mart, and the experience was nothing short of a cultural revelation.

Looking at the first 10 images of my journey, you can see that Koreans take their food very seriously. The sheer scale of the Ramen aisle and the dedicated Kimchi refrigerators (like the Bibigo section) tells you that tradition and convenience live side-by-side here.

What struck me most was the specialization. In the West, you might find "rice." In a Korean mart, you find specific rice for sushi, for soup, for snacks—each with a different texture and story. It’s a "Culinary Treasure Hunt" where even the dried anchovies are organized with the precision of a jewelry store.

As we moved into the second set of 10 images, the story shifted from what Koreans eat to how they live.

The massive variety of gourmet meal kits (Dongwon, Pulmuone) shows a society that values speed but refuses to compromise on health or taste.

Seeing rows of shiny kettles and sturdy pots reminded me of the practicality of Korean households. Things are built to last, yet designed with a modern, sleek aesthetic.

Next time you travel, skip the tourist traps for an hour and head to the local supermarket. Look at the labels, watch what people put in their carts, and breathe in the local atmosphere. In a Korean mart, you’re not just a shopper—you’re a guest in the nation’s kitchen.

Which part of the Korean mart looks most interesting to you? The endless ramen or the high-tech kitchenware? Let me know in the comments!
